Who should win two counties' top sports award?

Redditch Editorial 29th Aug, 2017   0

THIS is your chance to tell us who you think should be this year’s Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Personality of the Year.

With a number of athletes representing the West Midlands, the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire wishes to showcase the fantastic calibre of sportspeople that we have across our two counties and their success over the year.

Sponsored by the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards’ official media partner Bullivant Media – publisher of the Standard – the Sports Personality of the Year award will recognise an elite level athlete or sportsperson who is performing at the highest possible level in their sport.

This may be on the international stage, as part of Team GB or representing their club on a professional level.

Contrasting to the other award categories, the winner of the Sports Personality of the Year title will be determined based upon a public vote. Suggestions for nominees will be sent in by readers of newspapers published by Bullivant Media, including the Worcester Observer, Evesham, Pershore and Malvern Observers, Redditch & Alcester Standard and Bromsgrove Standard.

Swimming superstar Sascha Kindred CBE claimed the title last year, following a fantastic final year. The seven-time Paralympic champion topped off his international career with yet another world record in the 200 IM SM6 individual medley.

After a standing ovation, upon the receipt of his award, Sascha said: “I just want to say thank you to everybody in this room. I have lived in Hereford for 11 years now and the sense of community spirit and everyone who has supported me in my career is just amazing and I have so much gratitude.

“Thank you to everyone across Herefordshire and Worcestershire who has supported me over my career. It is a massive honour for me to win this award and I am sure the future is bright.

“We’re seeing the teenagers coming through and the wealth of talent across the two counties is truly incredible. We’re going to have some great talent coming through, winning medals at Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

The Herefordshire and Worcestershire award winners will be selected and given a ‘golden ticket’ into the West Midlands Community Sports Awards to be held on November 30, when the top talent, dedication, projects and coaches from across the region will be honoured.
