IT IS less than a month until the 2015 Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards evening takes place at Worcester Warriors’ Sixways home and now is the time for you to vote on who you think should be crowned winner of the top honour.

The Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) award – again being sponsored by Bullivant Media this year – sees six worthy nominees in contention and below we take a look at half a dozen special sportspeople who will be featured in the SPOTY category at the glittering event on Wednesday, November 4.

Tickets for the evening can be bought online and are £35 + VAT per person, which includes an arrival drink and two-course dinner.

Keep reading our titles in the coming weeks as we continue to look at the other award categories in which the cream of the two counties’ sportsfolk are highlighted.

Sean Geddes

WORCESTER City midfielder Sean Geddes rose to national fame in the 2014/15 season as the club made FA Cup headlines due to their giant-killing exploits.

Geddes scored both goals in Worcester’s famous 2-1 first round victory against Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena and also found the net as City came within a record-breaking penalty shoot-out of dumping out Scunthorpe United in the second round.

The following month Geddes was starring again when he scored the famous ‘rabona’ goal for Worcester in their FA Trophy tie against Barrow which went viral.

Joe Leach

WORCESTERSHIRE CCC all-rounder Joe Leach was a shining light for the Pears in 2015 despite the county narrowly failing to hang on to their top flight County Championship status.

Leach was the county’s leading wicket-taker in the four-day game with 59 scalps at an average of just over 30, whilst he also made significant contributions with the bat in the longer format of the game, averaging just under 30.

Leach, who is a dangerous one-day cricketer, is a popular player among his team-mates and has been praised by Worcestershire Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes for his effervescent approach to the sport.

In a Royal London One-Day Cup match against Northamptonshire at New Road in August, Leach became only the second person in the history of the professional game to take a hat-trick with the first three balls of a game.

Chris Pennell

THE REIGNING Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards Sports Personality of the Year was again a key man for Worcester Warriors as the club secured their return to the Aviva Premiership at the first time of asking.

Despite suffering injury at the start of the 2014/15 season, Pennell bounced back to play 17 times in Warriors’ Championship-winning side and scored ten tries – including two in a man of the match performance during the second leg of the astonishing play-off final against Bristol.

Pennell was also named man of the match for England Saxons as they beat Ireland Wolfhounds in January. He was vice-captain for the Warriors during the 2014/2015 campaign.

Sascha Kindred OBE

HEREFORD Paralympian Sascha Kindred is also a past winner of this award and he is again in contention.

Kindred swam in his seventh World Swimming Championships at the IPC Swimming World Championships 2015 in Glasgow in July.

The 37-year-old won yet another World Championship gold as he claimed victory in the 200m SM6 individual medley, which was major championship medal number 61 and makes it 11 out of 13 in the 200m individual medley event.

He also won bronze in the 50m S6 butterfly.

Claire Cashmore

REDDITCH-born Claire Cashmore won a hat-trick of medals at this year’s IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow as she won bronze in the 34pt 4x100m freestyle relay, silver in the SB8 100m breaststroke and topped it off with gold in the 34pt 4x100m medley relay.

Cashmore, who away from the pool is a keen ambassador for disability sport, also created a new British record in the SB 8 50m breaststroke of 37.51 and she has high hopes of competing impressively at the Rio 2016 Paralympics. If selected, it will be her fourth Paralympics.

Beth Crumpton

REDDITCH’S Beth Crumpton secured a hat-trick of British mountain biking U23 titles when she triumphed at the British Cycling MTB Cross-country Championships.

She set a fine pace as only elite riders Alice Barnes and Annie Last narrowly finished above her.

A regular on the World Cup stage, 21-year-old Crumpton finished an impressive ninth in the women’s cross-country mountain biking event at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and it is not unrealistic she could be selected for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

North West Cycling Club’s Crumpton recently finished in a highly encouraging fourth place – which may have been second spot but for a mechanical issue on the penultimate lap – in the opening round of the British Cycling National Trophy Cyclo-cross Series in Southampton.

In August Crumpton secured victory at an event in Cannock to seal the overall British National Series title for the second successive year.
