White revels in a Blaze of glory

REDDITCH-born Dale White is celebrating after being part of the Coventry Blaze team which claimed Elite League play-off final glory against reigning champions Sheffield Steelers on Sunday.

The 25-year-old defenceman, who works in Redditch, and his Blaze team-mates triumphed 4-2 as the underdogs in the showpiece final at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham.

The Coventry club, who last lifted the trophy in 2005, went into the final as underdogs having only finished sixth in the regular season but, having beaten 2013/14 regular season winners Belfast Giants 1-0 in a penalty shoot-out following their 2-2 draw after regulation and overtime in the semi-final, they gave themselves the chance of glory in front of the Premier Sports television cameras.

Blaze took an early lead through Steve Goertzen against his former club and they took control with three goals in the second period through Jereme Tendler, Ross Venus and Ashley Tait.

Sheffield, who topped the regular season table this season, hit back in the final period as Mathieu Roy scored twice, but Coventry held on for a famous victory.

Earlier on Sunday, Belfast Giants beat Hull Stingrays 8-6 in the third versus fourth play-off.
