IT WAS a better week for Alcester Bowling Club as four of the eight matches produced wins.

In the S&W Birmingham Over 60s League, the B team in Division Six entertained Woodlands A. Five out of six winning cards gave Alcester a 24-shot win, yielding nine points to the visitors’ one.

Alcester’s winners were Margaret D’Elia with a superb 21-2 card, Gill Spiers, Jean Craddock, Jean Sherrington (all 21-16) and David Hodgson (21-20).

It was cup week in the S&W Birmingham League and the A team played Co-op B at Central Edgbaston, where again Alcester had five out of six winners.

Once more it was Margaret D’Elia who led the way with a brilliant 21-5 card, backed up by an equally superb 21-6 win for John Alderson. Alcester’s other winners were Jean Bannister (21-10), Ken Craddock (21-13) and Ken Harvey (21-14), giving them a comfortable 55-shot passage into the third round.

In the same competition the B team faced Moseley Cricket Club’s B team on the Wythall green. They were unable to produce a single winning card and went out of the competition, losing by 50 shots.

In Division Two of the Yardley Wood Superleague, the A team hosted Bournville Sports. Excellent performances from Val McDermott and Dave Hovell (both 21-8) were insufficient, however, to prevent Alcester going down by eight shots. Jean Craddock (21-13) was Alcester’s other winner as they slipped to a 15-3 defeat.

The B team in Division Four on the other hand had an excellent 39-shot win at King George VI’s B team. Superb at 21-4 were Trish Barry and Gill Spiers, with Gill Evans (21-10), David Hodgson (21-11), Eric Allport (21-16) and John Willis (21-20) all contributing points in this 16-2 success.

It was also cup week in the Heart of England League in which Alcester B faced stiff opposition from Tanworth A – a team several divisions higher than Alcester.

Even the home half of the team were unable to produce a winning card, although Rick Horton went close before losing by a single shot.

The away four also lost all of their games and overall Alcester went out of the competition by a massive 77 shots.

In the over 60s section of the Heart of England League, Alcester A travelled to Co-op A in Division Two and were defeated by 16 shots. With Jean Bannister (21-13) and John Alderson (21-16) being the only winners, they gained just two points against the hosts’ 14.

The B team in Division Four entertained Marston Green A and had a very good 46-shot victory. With only one losing card, and that by a single shot, Alcester gained 15 points to the visitors’ one.

Outstanding for the home side was Margaret D’Elia, who completed a superb week with a third single-figure win, this time to three.

She received excellent support from Jean Craddock (21-10), David Hodgson (21-12), Trish Barry (21-15) and John Willis (21-18).
