Talented duo claim multiple honours

AS THE playing season at Redditch Golf Club comes to a close, Josh McMahon and James Robinson lead the way in the trophy-winning stakes having secured a superb haul of trophies between them at County level or better.

McMahon is the Midland Closed Champion (best of ten Midland counties) and, along with Robinson, Redditch became the Midland Closed team champions.

Both McMahon and Robinson, together with fellow Redditch golfer Matt Vigurs, will represent Worcestershire at the County National finals at Durham, having become Worcestershire team champions.

To add to this success, McMahon and Robinson won the Worcestershire 36-hole Foursomes Championship and in a battle of the club-mates McMahon beat Robinson to retain the Worcestershire County Matchplay title he won last year.

Not to be outdone, Robinson won the Worcestershire U18 Strokeplay title and, together with Nathan Grant and Rhys Hopkins, helped Redditch secure the Worcestershire County U18 Team title, meaning they will also go forward to the national finals.

On a wider note, the Redditch junior section goes from strength to strength. The junior team has just beaten approximately 35 clubs in the West Midlands area to secure the West Midlands Junior Leaque title and will be progressing further.

Russ Agar from Redditch has had an excellent first year as Worcestershire second team captain, narrowly finishing second to Warwickshire in the Midland Counties League.

The Redditch scratch team, under the guidance of the mercurial and ever-present Dave Clements, could not sustain a position in Midlands Division One, but they will endeavour to bounce back.

Worcestershire seniors have been well supported by Redditch players this year in the Seniors County Leaque. Next year’s captain will be Pete ‘Mr Sartorial’ Adams who will no doubt be supported by a number of Redditch seniors in their quest to win the Midlands Seniors League.

Redditch GC club captain Nigel Clay said: “The course has been in magnificent condition all year under the new team led by Karl and Harvey with their new and extensive equipment.

“Also, the club hosted the prestigious qualifying tournament for the European Challenge Tour Event, the Northern Irish Open, which we hope to host again next year.

“The season goes on until the end of October and the club is hoping to have more successes to report.”
