Studley fall just short of victory

STUDLEY sit sixth in the Warwickshire League Premier Division as they head into Saturday’s visit of Hampton & Solihull on the back of a losing draw at third placed Nuneaton.

Captained by Brandon Miller, the visitors won the toss and decided to field and it looked to be a good decision as wickets fell at regular intervals despite 61 at the top of the order from Jason Jakeman.

Only home skipper Lee McNeill (31) provided any other real resistance as Studley’s bowlers made good use of the conditions, most notably Luke Deeprose who took 4-38 off 12 overs.

Stuart Harris was the most economical bowler with 2-22 off his 12 overs and Josh Gandy (2-47) and Jack Williams (2-11) also enjoyed success as the north Warwickshire side were dismissed for 143 with one ball of their 50 overs remaining.

Having done the business with the ball, Studley were then firmly on course for victory as they reached 92-2 in reply as Chris Perrins (24) and Williams (33) looked in good touch.

However, wickets then began to tumble and despite a gritty 47 off 136 balls from Jawaad Nazir, the visitors lost their way.

Nazir’s departure left the score on 128-6 and, with deliveries running out, Studley eventually fell just short of their target as their innings closed on 139-9 off 50 overs.

Charlie Bass was stumped off the final delivery of the game attempting to hit the four which would have levelled the scores or the six which would have won the game.

STUDLEY 2nds registered their fifth successive Division Eight West victory as they defeated Castle Bromwich by three wickets in a low-scoring game and leapfrogged the visitors into top spot.

Skipper Chris Moss won the toss and inserted the visitors and it did not take the hosts long to strike as Greg Moore took a wicket in the first over.

The visitors recovered to reach 50-1 but then followed a scarcely believable collapse due to some good bowling and outstanding catching as Castle Bromwich were bowled out for 83 in just 24 overs as Moss finished with 5-17 and Lewis Richard 4-23.

Chasing just 84 for victory, Studley reached 30-0 due to some good batting from Jon Erskine and Sam Fonyodi, but they then suffered a collapse almost as bad as their hosts and at 60-7 the outcome was hanging in the balance.

However, Shane Ward and Moore held their nerve to see Studley home to 84-7 for a huge 20 points.

Captain Moss, whose side visit Hampton & Solihull on Saturday, said: “This was a massive win, very nervy but massive.

“We bowled well and the fielding again was very good and, although we lost seven wickets, I think it showed just how much strength we have batting-wise, as in every game all 11 batsmen are useful.

“Shane and Greg were superb at the end and batted beautifully.”
