MORE than 100 pupils from schools across the town descended on Redditch Tennis Club to enjoy the Redditch School Games event, which proved to be a big success.

The competition was split into age groups – years three and four, years five and six and years seven and eight – with the younger years playing timed singles matches on mini red courts whilst years seven and eight played doubles on a full court.

The year three and four event featured 14 teams and each had two boys and two girls who competed in one singles match for each tie.

Batchley First School’s A and B team both progressed to the final and their A team won 3-1 to claim the gold medal.

The year five and six contest had six teams and used the same format as the younger group. Ipsley and St Bede’s middle schools had both their teams progress to the semi-finals from which Ipsley A and St Bede’s A progressed to the final in which Ipsley prevailed after some close matches to book their spot at the county finals.

The School Games county finals will be held at Bromsgrove School on July 2 when all of the winners of the year three and four and year five and six events in the county will be in action.

Bronze medals went to Vaynor A team (year three and four) and Ipsley B (year five and six).

The year seven and eight contest was a doubles tournament with 11 pairs competing and Woodrush finished champions and Ridgeway were runners-up.

Trinity High School leaders were on hand all day setting up equipment and scoring the matches, of which there were 150.
