RUGBY UNION - Depleted Redditch RFC beaten at Greyhound

Redditch Editorial 2nd Feb, 2022   0

REDDITCH RFC’s promotion hopes suffered a blow as their depleted squad were beaten 12-0 by Greyhound to suffer a third straight defeat on the road.

Several players were forced to play out of position and their situation was made worse when captain Matt Allen suffered a match-ending shoulder injury early on.

The result means Redditch sit fifth in the Midlands 5 West (South) table, 11 points outside of the top two positions.

Redditch struggled to keep possession in the early stages of the game with Greyhound keen to counter attack their opponents and capitalise on any mistakes.

Fly-half Will Heath put in some searching kicks but possession made its way back to the hosts all too often who slowly made ground towards the Redditch line.

And just before half-time Greyhound scored the game’s first converted try as some crisp handling created a gap between the posts to leave Redditch 7-0 behind.

Redditch’s defence was watertight in the second period and even held firm when briefly reduced to 14 players after receiving a yellow card.

However, Greyhound eventually secured the win with the last play of the game to deny Redditch what would have been a deserved losing bonus point.

Redditch are next in action away at Stone on Saturday, February 5 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Enson Lane.
