ALCESTER returned to the top of the table with a second half century-plus points victory over the league’s bottom side this season.

Two tries in a blistering opening five minutes for Alcester set the tone for Saturday’s game, from which victory puts the Kings Coughton side four points clear of second placed Bromyard having played one game more.

Fly half Max Biltcliffe and winger Lewis Walker finished off fine flowing moves to put Alcester 12-0 up early on.

Such was the quality of Alcester’s play in those early stages, it was always going to be difficult to maintain those highest of standards.

As the tempo of the game slowed down, the home side began to find a way back into the match and Alcester’s pack was put to the test.

Mat Ashby, starting his first, first team game at prop, performed well but his fellow forwards found themselves under pressure and the home pack pulled a try back.

For 20 minutes it was a closely contested battle before centre Jamie Harland sprinted clear to score Alcester’s third try of the game, converted by Biltcliffe.

If the first half was a battle, the second half was a cruise for Alcester who ran in six more tries to complete their biggest away win of the season and their largest in Coventry for many years.

Winger Tom Goddard began the second half rout before man of the match Biltcliffe scored his second try of the game.

Skipper and leading try-scorer Jack Green scored twice, scrum half Robbie Parker ran in another and substitute hooker Anthony Cauvin found himself on the back of a driving maul and went over for a fine try that he dedicated to his team-mates in the pack.

Biltcliffe, who is having a battle royale for the Alcester number 10 shirt with teenager Josh O’Connor, amassed a personal total of 24 points.

Alcester continue their league campaign on Saturday when they make the trip to Pershore for a 3pm kick-off.

ALCESTER 2nds’ scheduled opponents Kidderminster Carolians pulled out of the fixture on Thursday evening and Alcester were unable to find alternative opponents, so elected to take a break at the weekend.

A DEPLETED Alcester Colts side showed how much they had progressed this season when they ran strong opposition close having been well beaten by them 51-5 earlier in the season.

Oscar Holland scored the home side’s try, which was converted by joint man of the match Harry Adams.

The Alcester scrum half shared the accolade with Aden Rawlings, who was awarded it for the second game running.

ALCESTER are inviting back all former players and members for their Legends Day on Saturday, April 1, which is also the day the 1st XV play Redditch in a league game.

The event is being run by members of the Three Pints Club in aid of the Injured Player Fund.
