‘Rocky’ Rolinson raises the roof

REDDITCH Boxing Academy’s (RBA) Patrick Rolinson showed admirable determination to defeat Jacob Ameghino over three hard-fought rounds in his latest grassroots encounter.

With the greater experience, RBA head coach Sarah Lee expected her charge to dominate with his technical ability but, as is often the way, ‘no plan survives first contact’ as Rolinson at times allowed himself to be dragged into a scrappy brawl.

Instead of keeping Ameghino at the end of his jab, Rolinson opted to throw looping right hands and close-range hooks, ultimately resulting in both boxers getting tied up.

The Redditch fighter did attempt to be the tidier fighter but was brought back into a brawl at every opportunity. Coming back to the corner, Rolinson realised, despite winning the round, he was not going to have his classiest of evenings.

Following instruction from Lee, Rolinson engaged the game plan of throwing straight shots in flurries and repeating in phases and this worked well until the novice boxing match saw its way back into a brawl.

Rolinson, realising where his strengths lay, held his own and maintained composure with some excellent fitness and the cleaner workrate.

In a bout with totally contrasting styles, Rolinson began the third round leaving nothing to chance. Upping his workrate, he peppered Ameghino with scoring shots until getting tied up in a close-range scrap. Stepping back at angles, he continued to attempt the more stylish boxing.

Once again, as the away boxer, Rolinson was not the crowd’s favourite and battled through the partisan cheers. Unperturbed, he grafted until the end of the round, at times proving too relaxed for his own good and catching the odd shot.

As the bout ended, Rolinson seemed to have done enough, however the decision lay with the judges. Did they favour the long-range, technical talents of Rolinson, or were they impressed with the tough and raw boxing style of Ameghino?

As the referee held both boxers in the centre of the ring, Rolinson was declared the winner and Lee said of his efforts: “I am immensely proud of Patrick, however he did not box to his best.

“Regardless, it shows true class to not perform to your best and still come away as the deserved winner.”
