RFU's O2 Touch programme is coming to Redditch

REDDITCH Rugby Club has been awarded the status of O2 Touch Centre and the club is gearing up for the official launch of O2 Touch in the town.

This will take place at the annual President’s Day celebrations when the club will be thrown open for an O2 Taster Session, which will kick-off at 1pm on Saturday, April 25 after a 12.30pm meet.

O2 Touch sessions are organised on a pitch up and play basis, which means you do not have to join a team, play every week or be totally committed.

What it does mean is that once registered you will be invited to every session and if the moment is good you can just turn up to the rugby club to play. Every session starts with some fitness work and some touch skills and ends with a game.

Redditch Rugby Club coach James Shotbolt is the lead operator for the O2 sessions and he will be joined by Queenfishers lady captain Olivia Nicholson, vice-chairman Tom Hodge and club secretary Steve Hindson in delivering the sessions on President’s Day.

They all attended the O2 Touch training sessions and further training for coaches and referees is being arranged. Sessions for club members have been running for the last five weeks and these have been well attended.

So successful have these sessions been that Redditch RFC have been invited to send a team to Twickenham to the ‘O2 Touch @ Twickenham Tournament’ which is taking place on Sunday.

Nicholson will captain a mixed team on the day and is really looking forward to the challenge and the privilege of playing on Twickenham’s hallowed turf.

Nicholson and her Queenfishers team-mates play and train regularly in the Worcester & Hereford Ladies Touch League.

Secretary Hindson said: “There is a huge buzz around the club as we gear up to welcome the general public to our O2 Touch sessions at Redditch Cricket, Hockey & Rugby Club.

“O2 Touch is rapidly becoming a popular way of keeping fit and having fun in a non-threatening, mixed, adult environment.

“The first session is free and after that sessions lasting around 90 minutes will cost just £2. With the full support of O2 and the RFU, an exciting programme of events is planned and everyone is welcome irrespective of ability or rugby experience.”
