Resilient Alcester Town do enough to maintain good run

ALCESTER TOWN climbed into fourth place in Midland League Division Three thanks to a hard fought 1-0 victory over visitors Boldmere Sports & Social Falcons on Saturday.

A strong wind made conditions difficult, but Danny Janes’ side were good value for their third successive win despite a stuttering second half showing and will be looking to maintain their momentum when they visit visit Inkberrow on Saturday.

Janes, whose side then travel to FC Stratford on Tuesday, said: “The most satisfying element of the victory is that our squad was stretched to its limit.

“We had three players become unavailable on Friday evening and Saturday morning due to circumstances out of their control, on top of five players being unavailable which I knew about.

“I was unable to sign anyone on because it was so late, therefore it was hard for me to get cover in. Chris Hill and Brendan Hicks were our only substitutes and both are not match-fit.

“Brendan broke down in the warm-up and we had to resiliently use Chris for the last 15 minutes after Sam Lakin picked up an injury. If you review the circumstances, the result is excellent.”

Alcester netted the only goal shortly before half time when Nick Dance cleverly timed his run to get behind the Boldmere full back before Nick Dance squared the ball to Leon Blundell who slotted home.

Despite the win though, Janes wants more from his side, especially when key players return.

“We have to evaluate our second half display as it was very poor in my opinion,” he added.

“I felt too many players produced average performances, something that I have commented on previously this season.

“We failed to do the simple things when in possession, meaning we could not play with any fluency and we created our own problems.

“I felt Luke Grubb was the outstanding player. He seemed to be everywhere on the pitch and he won his personal battle.”
