Redditch still seeking first league win

REDDITCH Entaco head into Saturday’s crucial clash at Bromyard still chasing that elusive first victory of the Worcestershire League Division One season.

The Kingfishers suffered a frustrating two-wicket defeat at home to Belbroughton last weekend, which left them joint bottom of the table with Harvington, although both sides sit just one point behind Bromyard.

Batting first, Redditch simply did not score enough runs and finished on 176 all out as only young opener Jack Roberson (35) and overseas man Francois Mostert (27) made notable contributions.

In reply Belbroughton struggled against the Redditch attack and lost wickets at regular intervals as the outcome of the match remained in the balance, but number three Tom Oliver (58) stood firm to see his side to 177-8 as the hosts were left to rue twice dropping Oliver.

Mostert enjoyed season’s-best figures of 5-59 off 16.2 overs and was the pick of the home bowlers, but he could prevent defeat for Redditch, who will head to Bromyard without first choice wicketkeeper Chris Weaver and pace bowler Greg Chinn.

It was also a frustrating day for the 2nds in Division One at Belbroughton as Geoff Eley’s men were beaten by the weather as heavy showers curtailed any chance of a Redditch win.

Belbroughton were restricted to 165-9 off their 50 overs, with Ash Freeman the pick of the bowlers in taking 3-29 off seven overs, whilst Harvey Chawner boosted his reputation in the spin department by taking 2-42 off 17 overs.

In reply Redditch got off to an excellent start as openers Liam Phelan (27) and Yassar Altaf (45) put the visitors in a strong position, but the home side bounced back to leave Redditch on 123-5 off 30 overs when showers forced the game to be halted.

Redditch took the lion’s share of the points with a winning draw and will look to kick on against Bewdley at Bromsgrove Road on Saturday.

There were mixed results for the 3rds and 4ths as Enville took the points in the 3rd XI Division Seven game at the Entaco, winning by 105 runs.

The visitors scored 205-9 and in reply Redditch Entaco collapsed to just 100 all out as Steve Bird top scored with 28.

The 4ths took the points in the Division Nine local derby against Feckenham as the Millers conceded the fixture.
