Redditch juniors impress

Liam Moakes 29th Mar, 2018 Updated: 29th Mar, 2018

ONE of Redditch Rugby Club’s U8s sides claimed victory as the age group finished unbeaten at Evesham RFC’s annual minis festival.

The All Stars side took first place in the U8s event, whilst team-mates the Beasts finished third in the same age group.

Elsewhere, Redditch’s U7s were joint third in their first festival, the U9s were third and U11s and U12s second.

However, the highlight of the Kingfishers’ efforts was the U8s squad. Redditch travelled with one U8s team but were asked if they could field two teams to fill a gap due to a non-arrival, so the Kingfishers had two sides in this age group.

In Pool B the Beasts defeated Evesham B 6-3 and Droitwich A 8-4, whilst they also drew 4-4 with Droitwich C. In Pool A the All Stars enjoyed 7-3, 5-3 and 6-3 wins over Evesham A, Bromyard and Droitwich B respectively.

The results proved enough for the All Stars to top their pool and the Beasts to end as runners-up. The latter faced Evesham A in the third-placed play-off, in which they came from 2-0 down at half-time to draw 4-4 and finish joint third.

There was no stopping the All Stars, though, who showed huge determination to win a thrilling final 9-8 against Droitwich A as both Redditch U8s sides ended the competition unbeaten.
