Redditch HDA juniors are still the team to beat

REDDITCH HDA players Harvey Ravenscroft and Scott Mortimer retained their Wildmoor Spa League Junior Cup crown with victory over Bidford.

The final was played at the Wildmoor Spa & Health Club, Alcester Road, Stratford, between last year’s champions Redditch HDA A and Bidford.

This was the Redditch side’s sixth consecutive cup final, having lost the first two but managing victory the last three years, although Ravenscroft and Mortimer only played in last year’s final as their previous pair were too old to enter the competition.

Bidford were making their first ever appearance in the final and were represented by Adam Farrow and Alfie Lovell.

The 12 and under age competition, sponsored by the league president and Alcester man Tony King, began in March with four pools of four pairs playing each other and taking it in turns to host each month.

A play-off pool night was then held at Littletons Tennis Club where the four pool winners – Henley, Redditch HDA A and B teams and Bidford – played each other, from which the top two sides reached the final.

Watched by parents, coaches and league officials, both sets of boys were keen to do well, but the experience of the HDA A pair showed as they ran out 6-1, 6-1 winners.

League chairman Tony Eskew presented the boys with individual awards and of course the cup.

The Junior League organiser and league secretary Corin Bishop also presented a cheque for £50 from the league to HDA to help develop their junior section.
