REDDITCH Boxing Academy members have enjoyed some fantastic results in recent weeks which have rewarded the dedicated training they have put in.

Managing director Sarah Lee said: “The Academy is proving to be a real hive of talent as many of our students are going on to compete for the club and getting the results they work so hard for.”

“The results this last month have been fantastic,” added coach John O’Hare, who took his team to the Tipton Open competition.

The event was an open grade and open weight competition with opportunities for boxers of all levels to compete.

Eight competitors from OMA Kickboxing Club based at the Academy took part in a fantastic day of skills and semi-contact competition.

Many of the competitors were participating for the first time and exceeded all expectations with their attitude and workrate.

O’Hare said: “Club members shone, winning seven medals and demonstrating a high level of skill, determination and heart. I am overwhelmed by the effort given by all and look forward to the next one.”

The Academy’s Leo Fanthome secured two victories in a week. The first bout was in Shrewsbury against a determined and aggressive boxer who came out in the first round giving his all.

Staying composed, Fanthome boxed nicely, looking for the counter-shot and following up with his own well rounded combinations.

The bout went into the second round in which Fanthome proved too much for his attacking opponent, stopping him with three standing counts.

His second bout was as part of the Academy team which travelled to Stoke. Fanthome took on a fine southpaw boxer and the fight featured skill and dedication from both boxers.

As the rounds went on Fanthome started to get to grips with his long, rangy southpaw opponent, who caused trouble with his heavy right hand and left hooks.

Neither boxer gave up and it was Fanthome who secured victory with a unanimous decision.

Coach Darren Long said: “We can see big things ahead for Leo as his skills are really starting to show through. Watch this space.”

The Academy team will travel to Milton Keynes at the weekend to support Aimee Newton in a bout matched at 46kg.

Newton has worked hard to prepare for this exciting opportunity and cannot wait to leave it all in the ring.

The Academy offers a wide range of services catering for all ages and requirements. For more details call 01527 526917 or visit www.redditchboxing.co.uk.
