Redditch Borough enjoy home comforts

Redditch Editorial 30th Nov, 2016   0

REDDITCH Borough maintained their superb form as they eased to a 3-0 home victory over Leamington Hibernian in Midland League Division Two to climb into fifth place.

Both sides made a cautious start to Saturday’s battle of the promoted teams, but midway through the first half a typically opportunist finish from Luke English gave Borough the lead.

Borough extended their lead a couple of minutes later when a sumptuous long-range strike from Ollie Saunders was fumbled by the keeper and Courtney Sowe slotted in the rebound from close range.

Inevitably it was young star Callum Hall who completed the scoring when he buried a superb cross from Billy Garvey for his fifth league goal of the campaign.

Borough, who were due to visit Malvern Town last night (Wednesday) in the Smedley Crooke Memorial Charity Cup, face a Les James Challenge Cup quarter-final derby at Feckenham on Saturday (1.30pm).

REDDITCH Borough Ladies suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat at Birmingham County Women’s League Division One leaders St John’s Ladies on Saturday.

It was a tough time for Borough against the title favourites, but coach Terry Laing said: “With the ladies being a new side this season, it is always difficult to play against established sides.

“We’ve got the squad up to 16 to 17 players. In truth, we could do with a pre-season to get the players developing further, but we don’t have that opportunity.

“To concede six goals is tough but we are hopeful of turning things around. It’s going to be a challenge for the players but we know we have the squad to progress.”

Redditch visit Atherstone Rangers in a key game on Sunday.
