Racer Rob is set for premier series

A REDDITCH motocross star’s meteoric rise in the sport shows no sign of abating after a string of high-octane performances earned him a place in Britain’s premier series.

Rob Yates will now be lining up with the most talented riders from all over the UK after a scintillating debut season in the British Championship youth category (MXY2) propelled him on to the biggest domestic stage.

Eighteen-year-old Yates, who began riding at the age of just five, has also been backed by the world’s largest tyre manufacturer Bridgestone for a further season following a relentless charge up the MXY2 class on the company’s Battlecross tyres.

The teenager has gradually moved up in stages from 50cc to 125cc and now on to an adult 250cc Yamaha to underline his extraordinary rise to prominence in a particularly competitive sport.

A fifth place in the MXY2 standings was Yates’ initial target at the start of the 2015 season as he factored for more experienced riders in a series that is notoriously uncompromising.

However, he surpassed all expectations to achieve a third place podium finish overall amongst a field of up to 40 other talents.

His achievements have now earned him a place in the MX2 British Championship, to the delight of his father Tony.

“We’re all extremely proud of Rob. He has been doing all of the right things away from the track to give himself the best opportunity to go far in the sport,” said Tony.

“He is living the right way and is taking his motocross extremely seriously. Qualifying for the British Championship is testament to this and we couldn’t be happier for him.

“Bridgestone has always been there to support Rob on his journey, when he was a 15-year-old competing in British schoolboy competitions.

“He has come a long way and the support from Bridgestone has given him a shot of confidence, while its premium tyres have been the best he’s ever raced on. They’ve really made a difference.”

Bridgestone’s sales and training development manager Mark Fereday said: “Rob has been something of an ambassador for us both on and off the track.

“He has either been winning races or challenging for races all season and his performances have certainly alerted other people about our tyres, such are Rob’s performances on them.

“We knew had huge potential, but he appears to be fulfilling it already – and sooner than even we expected.

“It’s been a privilege to sponsor Rob and we will be supporting him in 2016 on an even bigger stage. He’s earned the right to be there and, on behalf of everyone at Bridgestone, we wish him all the best.”
