Profitable week for Alcester

Redditch Editorial 8th May, 2019   0

ALCESTER Bowling Club had a good week, with five wins from the eight matches played even though most were away from home.

The first match of the week saw the A team fall to a heart-breaking single-shot defeat at AG College B in Division Three of the S&W Birmingham Over 60s League. Excellent cards from Renny Bannister and John Alderson (both 21-12) ensured the closeness of the outcome, but Alcester had to accept an 8-2 defeat.

In Division Three of the Yardley Wood Superleague, Alcester A visited Stoke Prior. They found the new Stoke green very much to their liking with five winning cards in this 15-3 success.

Starring roles were played by Jean and Renny Bannister both with 21-11 wins, with Dave Hovell also excellent at 21-12. Further points were added by Rick Horton (21-15) and Ken Harvey (21-16) to give a 13-shot winning margin.

The B team in Division Four suffered a narrow six-shot home defeat against West Midlands Travel. Winning cards from a sublime Margaret D’Elia (21-3), John Willis (21-11) and Eric Allport (21-13) could not turn the tide, however, and Alcester went down 15-3.

It was cup week in the Heart of England League, with both Alcester teams involved in the preliminary round. The competition has four players playing at home and the other four away in each match.

The A team were drawn against Ye Olde Knowle B, with the home four having winning cards from Margaret D’Elia (21-11) and Dave Hovell (21-14) to win by ten shots. The away four were the more successful with wins for John Alderson (21-11), Carole Slater (21-12), John Slater (21-18) and Renny Bannister (21-19) to earn a 24-shot success and a 34-shot victory overall.

Drawn against Marston Green, the B team also progressed into the first round with a seven-shot win overall. At home wins for Ken Harvey (21-15) and Jean Sherrington (21-18) were not enough to prevent a three-shot deficit but the away four had wins from Mike Rowell with a superb 21-6 card, Red Masterson (21-13) and David Hodgson (21-20), to see them triumph by ten shots.

In Division Two of the Heart of England Over 60s League, the A team visited Yardley Wood Social. Once more John Alderson (21-12) and Renny Bannister (21-17) were the only winners as Alcester fell to a 24-shot defeat as the home team picked up 14 points to Alcester’s two.

In Division Four, the B team had two matches. The first was the rearranged match at Solihull British Legion B where Red Masterson was in blistering form for the visitors with a 21-2 success, hotly pursued by David Hodgson (21-8).

With John Willis (21-15) and Val McDermott (21-18) also successful, Alcester cruised to a 19-shot victory which yielded 14 points to the Legion’s two.

The B team were 14-2 home winners over Wythall B. Chief architects of the win were John Willis (21-8) and David Hodgson (21-9), with Geoff Spiers (21-17) and Red Masterson (21-19) also adding points.
