WOODRUSH High School pupil Kathryn Powell performed superbly to win a silver medal at the British Rhythmic Gymnastics Team Championships recently.
The 17-year-old competed with four others from the City of Birmingham Gymnastics Club in the Senior Group category, in which the gymnasts were required to perform two different routines.
The first required dexterity and skill as the group threw, caught and twirled ten clubs to a modern pop song, whilst the second combined both ribbons and balls to great effect.
Their achievement was even more impressive as they overcame a last-minute substitution due to injury but, despite this, the gymnasts were able to maintain their high standards.
Positioning at this event also determines the league category which the gymnasts will compete in throughout 2015.
Powell and her group qualified for the highest league for rhythmic gymnastics – the Elite League.
Powell’s success adds to her collection of British medals, including two bronze medals which she won at the British Club Team Championships in October last year, as a result of both her Senior team and the City of Birmingham GC being placed third in this prestigious event.
