No change at the top

THE TOP three all won their week six matches in the Swan Studley Skittles League but unbeaten leaders Chris & Gerry Show were pushed hard by Lodge Farmers.

Having trailed by a small margin after two legs, Lodge Farmers recovered to lead by a single pin following the next two legs. C&G Show’s last leg score left Farmers a not too difficult total of 59 pins to win, but Farmers struggled to finish with their lowest leg score of the game (50 pins) and were beaten.

Roger Powell (37 pins), Glyn Morley 35 and Chris Prichard 33 were Farmers’ main scores while for C&G Show Dave Williams bowled well for 38, backed up by Molly Burbidge and Arthur Sears with 35 each.

Second placed Maudslay had, for them, an unusually low total pin score, but it was more than enough to beat nine-man Swingers.

Even with ten men it is doubtful if Swingers could have reversed the result as they too produced a very low total. Keith Fryer made 35 and there were 34s from Dean Watson and Geoff Mayneord for the winners. Best from Swingers came from Paul Clifton with 37 (ten-stack) and Larry Hanks’ 31.

There were no problems for third placed Engineers. Leading by 15 pins after leg one, Engineers never lost their grip on the game to comfortably beat Team BG who, following a promising start to the season, have now slipped again in the table to fifth place.

Mark Ganderton scored 40, Maurice Wroe 37 and Luke Sanders 35 (12-stack) for Engineers. For Team BG, only Robert Baker and Ray Cartwright with 40 and 36 respectively threatened Engineers’ dominance.

Alcester Nomads took closer order at the top with what was ultimately an easy win against Mixtures, but it started so differently.

The teams were level after leg one and Mixtures actually led by six pins after leg two only for their wheels to come off, just as Nomads finally got their act together.

Geoff Lout 43 (14-stack), Eddie Upright 36 and Gordon Povey 35 led Nomads’ revival and for Mixtures Gwyn McDonald with 37 top scored for successive weeks.

Although leading throughout the game, Jumbo Jet Set could never relax against bottom team Swan.

Jumbos were grateful to Steve Wardle for two stacks (11 and 12 in a total of 44) in the opening two legs to give his side a seven-pin advantage. Then Swan’s Phil Bussey had successive stacks (15 and 12 in a total of 46) to cut the advantage to three pins.

Jumbos finally left Swan 67 pins to win which proved just out of reach for the losers for whom Graham Howells made 37 and Joe Withers 33. Other main scores for Jumbos were Ben Jones 37 and Mick Stanton 33.

Results: Jumbo Jet Set 9 points (315 pins) Swan 2 (307); Maudslay 10 (310) Swingers 1 (251); Lodge Farmers 2 (310) C&G Show 9 (315); Engineers 8.5 (334) Team BG 2.5 (309); Mixtures 2.5pts (273) Alcester Nomads 8.5 (317).
