Mixed emotions after opening matches

THE WHITE Hart Crown Green Bowls Club Friday AM and Saturday PM teams began their 2015 league campaigns at the weekend and the opening matches resulted in mixed fortunes for the Redditch club.

The Friday Over 60s team were in Heart of England Division One action at The Royal Austin British Legion, who are notoriously difficult to beat on their home green at Northfield.

Captain Ian Humphreys led by example though with a 21-6 victory and was well supported by Ray Richards who won 21-18, giving the visitors two points in an 18-shot defeat.

The B team began their Division Three campaign in good form by beating Wootton Hall A at home by 12 shots, giving them 13 league points.

Wins for Tom Hawkes (21-6), Gill Croft (21-14) and Sheila Humphreys (21-11) helped to give the team the start they were looking for.

The Saturday Warwickshire and Worcestershire League team in Premier Division Four were beaten 238-151 at Boldmere Sports & Social by a very good team who only missed out on promotion by one point last season.

Paul Matthews (21-17) and Ian Humphreys (21-11) won their matches for White Hart, as Matthews came back from 14-8 behind and Stuart Rice only lost by three shots after being 18-13 up.

Rob Faulks settled well in his first Premier match before losing 21-10 and stand-in John Meredith also performed well in a 21-13 defeat.

Dave Edwards improved on recent form to lose narrowly 21-16, while captain Stan Pritchard produced some accurate woods before succumbing 21-13.

Dave Kings began promisingly before fading to a 21-12 loss and Mick (Mighty Midget) Perrins competed well but was caught on a particular mark by his Boldmere opponent who won 21-12.

Ken Brown struggled to find his form in a 21-8 defeat but White Hart were far from disgraced overall in what could prove to be one of their toughest matches of the season.

They will be looking to turn the tables on their opponents in the return fixture at the Headless Cross green this Saturday.
