Let's keep up the charge says Astwood Bank skipper Adshead

CAPTAIN Steve Adshead has called for more of the same from his Astwood Bank team as they continue their quest for promotion from Birmingham League Division Three with a home game against fellow hopefuls Streetly on Saturday.

Bank stretched their unbeaten run to eight games with six wins in that period with a comprehensive six-wicket victory at Worfield on Saturday and Adshead was delighted with what he saw.

“It was a thoroughly good all-round performance,” said Adshead. “Once again we bowled well as a unit and then held our nerve well with the bat and got over the line comfortably after a bit of a wobble earlier in the innings.

“I’ve said repeatedly this is a topsy-turvy league and the table can change quickly, but we are looking a good side at the moment and we don’t need to worry about anything or anyone other than trying to keep doing what we’re doing and then hopefully more positive results will follow.”

On a pitch which saw the ball keep low at times, Bank’s quickest bowler Mike Desmond took full advantage to take 4-14 off 9.2 overs as Worfield were dismissed for 141 before Sam Thomas made 50 not out in the visitors’ reply to guide them to 24 points and cement second spot, four points behind leaders Fordhouses.

“I was particularly pleased for Sam Thomas to make that fifty because he’s missed some cricket due to personal circumstances and it’s good to see him back in the runs and making a big contribution to the side,” added Adshead.

“Three of our top seven have passed fifty in the league three times this season now so that’s pleasing.

“We expect a tough game against Streetly who will be bidding to bounce back after suffering two defeats and losing top spot, but my focus is on ourselves and making sure we apply ourselves properly.”

BANK’S Sunday 1st XI defeated Himley by 39 runs to reach the quarter-finals of the Worcestershire T20 County Cup in which they will host last season’s champions Worcester on Sunday, July 17.

After winning the toss, Bank elected to bat first and quickly set about the Himley bowling attack with some lusty hitting from openers Tom Underhill (50) and Tom Harris.

The middle order continued to attack and helped push the total to an impressive 173-6.

Himley started well in reply but, when Harris struck in the seventh over, wickets started to tumble as Himley tried to keep up with the run rate.

Four wickets for Muhammad Safyan and three for Dan Taylor saw Himley dismissed for 134 in 19 overs.

BANK’S Sambourne Lane home will host the Happy Accident band on Saturday in an event which will also feature Music Like Lemons, Joby Capper and Snow Mexicans.

The Bands on the Bank event takes place between 8-11pm and admission is £5 for adults and £2 for children. The bar will be open until midnight.
