Kingfishers power on at the top

REDDITCH Entaco have a 37-point lead at the top of Worcestershire League Division Two after a thrilling seven-run victory at Coombs Wood on Saturday.

Batting first, the Kingfishers battled to 229 all out, largely thanks to Russell Southwick (44) and Jack Roberson (43).

In reply, Coombs Wood looked destined to take the points but the Kingfishers bounced back as Noman Choudry produced his best bowling figures this season of 5-70 to dismiss the hosts for 222 in the final over, which they began requiring ten to win.

The Kingfishers are on their travels again this Saturday at lowly Bredon.

The 2nds’ miserable form continued in Division One 2nd XI as they slumped to an eight-wicket defeat at home to Coombs Wood.

Only Raheem Basharat with 52 not out showed any form as the Kingfishers could only muster 176-8 off 50 overs.

In reply the visitors made light work of their task and Redditch will hope for a much better display against Netherton at Bromsgrove Road on Saturday.

There were contrasting fortunes for the 3rds and 4ths against Tenbury Wells as the 3rds were bowled out for just 43 in Division Five in a nine-wicket away defeat, but the 4ths were three-wicket winners on home soil.

Olly Mason had a day to remember as he took 6-24 as Tenbury were skittled out for 187 in the 45th over.

Opening the batting, Mason scored 41 and Dean Ottley 36 to put the Kingfishers in control before a clutch of wickets put Tenbury back in the match, however veteran all-rounder Nev Mason (60no) saw the Kingfishers home in the 36th over.

Barnt Green are the opposition for the 3rds and 4ths this weekend.

On Bank Holiday Monday Redditch juniors hosted a touring side from Bedminster CC in a 35-over game.

After winning the toss, home captain Tanay Kulkarni elected to bat on a wicket freshly prepared by junior groundsman Jacob Ottley.

Redditch started the game brightly as the opening pair of Mason and Kulkarni put on a decent partnership of 44 before the latter was dismissed for 14.

Mason continued to dispatch the ball to all parts of the ground and was well supported by Habib Ahmed (14) and Faizan Ahmed (20) before bringing up his maiden century for Redditch in emphatic style, having only faced 72 balls, hitting 11 fours and three sixes before he was dismissed for 101.

After that the Redditch batsmen struggled as only Ikram Hussain and Owen Edwards contributed to get the score up to 190.

In reply Bedminster did not get off to the best of starts as Edwards struck early to leave the visitors on 14-1.

Bedminster continued to struggle as great bowling by Kulkarni and Jacob Ottley reduced them to 86-5.

However, a partnership of 60 took the visitors to within 45 runs of their target with seven overs to spare, but some great ground fielding from Josh Ganderton and Raza Hussain helped keep the score down and some tight bowling at the end by Ahmed and a great final over from Mohammed Zahid ensured Redditch won the game by seven runs.

Any juniors wishing to take up cricket or thinking about joining a club are welcome to training at Redditch Entaco. It takes place on Fridays between 6-8pm. For more details e-mail [email protected].
