Redditch Editorial 27th Apr, 2017   0

REDDITCH ENTACO got their Worcestershire League Division One campaign off to a fine start with a three-wicket victory at home to Eastnor on Saturday.

The teams were two divisions apart last season but it was the promoted Kingfishers who prevailed thanks to an impressive bowling performance.

Having won the toss, Eastnor elected to bat were soon in trouble as pace bowlers Noman Choudry and Waqas Ali made early inroads.

Eastnor were revived a little by a sixth-wicket stand of 79 but another batting collapse saw them bowled out for just 188 as Noman Choudry claimed 4-35, Waqas Ali 3-38 and spinner Haris Ali 3-50.

Redditch cruised to 76-0 in reply as Rizwan Choudry (39) and Oliver Mason (34) found some form, before Russell Southwick chipped in with 29 and overseas wicketkeeper Brandon Weal made 51.

With victory in sight, the hosts lost four quick wickets, but Tom Phelan’s boundary saw them home on 192-7 with 14 overs to spare.

Captain Southwick takes his side to Hagley on Saturday for what is expected to be a tougher test of their credentials.

REDDITCH 2nds also made a winning start to their Division One 2nd XI campaign with a five-wicket success at Eastnor.

The Kingfishers dismissed the hosts for 245 as teenagers Raheem Basharat (5-75) and Marlon Lokenath (3-53) did the damage.

In reply, Redditch lost Nick Fowkes without scoring but Naseek Hussain (61) and Luke Davis (43) repaired the damage.

Asif Mukhtar (20) and Geoff Eley (12) contributed but Lokenath (56no) and Abdul Jabbar (30no) saw Redditch home to a well deserved victory.

Hagley are the visitors to Bromsgrove Road on Saturday.

The 3rds and 4ths start their seasons against Old Hill at home and away respectively on Saturday.
