JACK BUCKLEY and Ben Myatt were victorious in the annual Boulton Salver held at Redditch Golf Club.

The competition format is 36 holes, foursomes medal with the best nett score taking the salver.

At the end of the morning round, the last group out – Ben Myatt and Jack Buckley – from Redditch GC, had the best score of 70 nett.

However, there were many other pairs still in the hunt, notably Dave Wainwright and Colin Bullock from Stourbridge GC (71), Craig Richardson and Callum Hutchinson from Kidderminster GC (73), James Robinson and Steve Bird from Redditch GC (73) and Dan Cook and Ben Bogosian from Stourbridge GC (73).

With Myatt and Buckley in the last group out, nobody could be sure of the eventual winners until the final moment.

Richardson and Hutchinson added a 75 to their morning 73 and their total of 148 put them just in front of Carl Young and Scott Schuck from Droitwich GC, whose afternoon 72.5 gave them an overall total of 149.

Other notable performances came from Mark Goddard and Craig Blackford from Redditch Kingfisher GC and Wainwright and Bullock who both finished on 150.

However, Myatt and Buckley held their nerve in the final match, returning an impressive nett 69, for a total of 139, which gave them a clear victory to take the Boulton Salver.

It is the second year running Buckley has been part of the winning pair.

Grenville Rose, president of the WUGC, presented the trophy to Myatt and Buckley and thanked Redditch GC for hosting the event and presenting the course in such fine condition.

Thanks were also given to the volunteers who ran the day – Will Painter, Dave McDermott and Denis Hayes for starting, McDermott, Brenda Smith, Pete Adams and Hayes for helping with the administration and Tony Edwards, John Whitehead and Clive Werrett for refereeing.

Normally the winners of the salver get to host the event again next year, but county rules state no club should host the event for more than three consecutive years.

Redditch GC have now won in 2014 (at Moseley GC), 2015, 2016 & 2017 and therefore there will be a new venue for 2018.
