“It’s in our own hands” says Young

CAPTAIN Adrian Young says he and his Redditch team-mates will be giving it everything they have got in their quest to win both the West Midlands Division One title and promotion.

The Kingfishers secured a hard-fought 2-1 home win over local rivals Bromsgrove on Saturday to move up to second and remain level on points with leaders Market Drayton, who top the pile on goal difference and host Redditch on Saturday.

Redditch, who sit above third-placed Stourport 2nds on goal difference, then finish the campaign a week on Saturday with the visit of fourth-placed Ludlow who themselves are still in the promotion mix three points behind.

Once again Redditch did things the hard way as they continued an all too familiar habit of falling behind but they showed admirable battling qualities to hit back and sink Bromsgrove.

Young said: “It is all in our hands with two games to go. This league has been really competitive and there are lots of good teams who have caused us problems.

“The lads are working so hard for each other which was evident in that game against Bromsgrove. Even when we went 1-0 down we knew we were good enough to stage a comeback and we worked hard for it.”

The visitors took the lead as their direct, counter-attacking approach broke through the Redditch defence and the Bromsgrove forward rounded goalkeeper Joe Cardy before slotting home.

Redditch then began to get a better grip of the game and the forward line of James Makin, Dan Waite and Jacob Beard interchanged positions well to create spaces.

The hosts equalised midway through the first half with a well-executed penalty corner which was drag-flicked at goal by Jacob Beard where Andy Billingham strongly deflected the ball home on his reverse stick side for his fourth goal of the season.

Then, a few minutes before half time, another smart short corner – this time flicked low and hard by Beard to the bottom corner – gave Redditch the lead.

In the second half, the team worked hard to defend their lead with Harry Williams and Dan Jakeman tireless in the centre of midfield, putting pressure on Bromsgrove whenever they had the ball.

Youngsters Harry Saunders and James Browning provided width going forward and support to the defence and Billingham was solid in central defence.

It was Billingham and Pete Dawson – playing in a holding role in midfield – who were able to distribute the ball well from the back to relieve the pressure and see out the game for a crucial victory.
