Home advantage is key to outcomes

AS IS OFTEN the way with crown green bowling, Alcester’s latest results went completely with ground advantage.

The A team suffered their first defeat of the season In Division Four of the S&W Birmingham Over 60s League when they visited West Midlands Transport A.

Both teams had been promoted together from Division Five last season and each had three winning cards, but a couple of poor results for Alcester meant they went down by 22 shots.

Winners for the visitors were Renny Bannister (21-12), Bob LeResche (21-15) and Ken Harvey (21-18), giving Alcester three points against seven for the home side.

The B team in Division Six produced an excellent performance at home to Woodlands Park C to triumph by 46 shots. Red Masterson (21-7), Tricia Barry (21-8), Jean Sherrington and Gill Spiers (both 21-9) and Geoff Spiers (21-10) gave Alcester victory by nine points to the visitors’ one.

Similar results came in the Yardley Wood Superleague as the A team won by 29 shots at home to Woodbourne B in Division Three and the B team lost by 46 shots at Colebrook B in Division Four.

Returning to the A team after illness, Val McDermott ran riot with a superb 21-3 card, backed up by Rick Horton and David Hodgson (both 21-12), Dave Hovell (21-17) and Ken Harvey (21-20) to give Alcester a 15-3 success.

Jean Sherrington (21-20) was the B team’s only winner in a 17-1 defeat, with Margaret D’Elia suffering her sixth 21-20 reverse of the season.

In Division Two of the Heart of England League, the A team met some stern resistance from visitors Warstock before running out victors by ten shots.

Winning cards came from John Alderson (excellent at 21-9), Bob LeResche (21-12), Jean Bannister (21-13), Ken Harvey (21-16) and Carole Slater (21-18) to give Alcester a 15-3 triumph.

In Division Five, the B team went down by 13 shots at Black Horse B. However, Alcester did have four winning cards from Val McDermott, Jean Sherrington and Eric Allport (all 21-14) and Rick Horton (21-15) to give them four points to the home side’s 14.
