SATURDAY’S White Hart Club Championship attracted 17 bowlers and it was Martyn Higgins who emerged triumphant.

The weather was hot and sunny and the Headless Cross green played very fast but the bowling was of a good standard throughout.

At the semi-final stage Higgins took control of his match with Ray Richards early on and did not allow his opponent into the game, running out a comfortable 21-12 winner.

The other semi pitted Mike Estell matched against Kirk Wright who began well to take a 10-5 lead. Estell then began to find better weight which brought him back into the game and, despite a late fightback by his opponent, it was Estell who finally made it through 21-17.

In the final Estell took a 10-5 lead against Higgins who then began to bowl accurately forward and back across the crown, dominating the match from that point onwards.

Estell finally reclaimed the jack after Higgins bowled it off the green but he failed to add to his score, losing 21-10.

White Hart’s Sunday A team now only have a slim chance of promotion from Division Two following a 162-124 home defeat against Weoley Castle WMC who are now in second place, 13 points ahead of the Redditch club.

Graham Arnott (21-15) was Hart’s only winner, although both Kirk Wright and Ray Richards were only beaten by a single shot.

In Heart of England Division Two, White Hart A gained a vital 152-118 home win over Hockley Heath A and climbed out of the Division Two relegation zone in the process.

They produced six winning cards from Gill Croft (21-13), Ray Richards (21-8), Brian Chatterley (21-13), Ken Brown (21-6) Mick Perrins (21-18) and captain Ian Humphreys (21-18).

White Hart B were hammered 160-99 at Solihull Marsh Lane in Division Three, having just two winners in the shape of Norman Batchelor (21-18) and Dave Edwards (21-16).

In HOE Over 60s League Division One, White Hart A took a heavy 121-64 beating on the difficult Kings Norton Ex-Service green where only Norman Batchelor (21-16) could produce a winning card.

Hart’s B team had a much easier morning and ran out comfortable 126-62 winners with all six winning cards including two to single figures from Gill Croft (21-7) and Neil Laxton (21-5).

In Yardley Wood & District League Division Two, White Hart A gained a fine 150-114 away win at British Oak B with four emphatic wins from Ian Humphreys 21-1, Sheila Humphreys 21-9 and Ray Richards and Mike Hancock (both 21-10).

The B team narrowly missed making the final of the Division Four Mini Cup despite beating Maggies B 145-123.

In SW Birmingham & District League Division One, White Hart A were 16 shots down at halfway at home to RASP A but finished strongly to win 110-105. Mike Estell sealed victory at the end with a 21-18 card.

The B team joined Black Horse B at the top of Division Four after a 104-92 win at West Midlands Travel A. Their three wins all came in the first half from Ken Brown 21-9, Gill Croft 21-11 and Sheila Humphreys 21-9.
