Hart win title in final day thriller

Redditch Editorial 12th Sep, 2019   0

WHITE Hart’s B team won the SW Birmingham & District Division Four title on a thrilling final day on Tuesday.

Their last match of the season was at Henley A, while their two main rivals Black Horse B and Ye Olde Knowle C also had difficult away matches.

Hart could only manage two winning cards from Norman Batchelor (21-13) and Mick Perrins who produced a vital final end to win his tie 21-20. Captain Sue Sugden and the team then had to wait nervously for the other results to come in but, with Knowle and Black Horse only taking one and two points respectively, White Hart B were crowned champions on shot difference from Black Horse after both teams ended up with 113 points.

White Hart A were having a difficult tie in Division One at home to struggling Hall Green A who gave the Redditch team an unexpected fright, winning four of the six ties.

However, easy wins for Ray Richards (21-5) and Neil Laxton (21-6) helped to give Hart a narrow 103-95 victory, keeping them in fifth place with two matches to play.

In the Saturday Warwick and Worcester League, White Hart could only manage one winner from 12 ties at Queslett (Katy Lang 21-17) and now need a good home performance in their final match this weekend against the same side to secure their place in Division Four next season.

In Heart of England League Division Two, White Hart A were soundly beaten 168-81 at Olton Tavern A without a single winner, while a narrow 138-135 defeat at home to Black Horse A means White Hart B are relegated from Division Three.

Hart had three winners from the tie – Phil Hemming (21-4), Mike Hancock (21-11) and captain Norman Batchelor (21-18) – but ended the season agonisingly four points short of safety.

In the Sunday Northfield & District League Division Two, White Hart A fought well at King George V B to gain a 142-140 win with four winning cards – Martyn Higgins 21-16, Ian Humphreys 21-7, Mike Estell 21-14 and Ken Brown 21-19 – while White Hart B defeated British Oak B 157-134 at home in Division Three with six winners – Norman Batchelor 21-15, Mike Hancock 21-19, Sue Sugden 21-17, Phil Hemming 21-11, John Meredith 21-19 and captain Dave Edwards 21-11.
