FOOTBALL - Redditch United's nine-game unbeaten run ended at Royston

REDDITCH United saw their nine-game unbeaten run in the league come to an end after the Reds were beaten 1-0 away at Royston Town.

Substitute Brandon Adams came off the bench to score the winning goal on 66 minutes at the Garden Walk Stadium.

And the result means Redditch sit 12th in the Southern League Premier Central table, still 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

The Reds felt they should have had an early penalty when Dan Sweeney went down under the challenge of  Royston defender only for the referee to wave away the striker’s appeals.

And Redditch almost took the lad on the quarter hour mark when Sweeney’s near post effort was superbly saved by Dimitrios Kyriatzis who made a reaction stop to keep the ball out.

At the other end, Royston struck the crossbar through Isaac Galliford after Redditch failed to clear a long throw from the right.

As the half came to a close, the Reds saw another penalty appeal fall on deaf ears when Sweeney was kicked in the ankle by a Royston defender as he went to pull the trigger.

And the home side took the lead when substitute Adams tapped home at the back post from Finlay Titchmarsh’s cross from the right.

Sweeney continued to cause problems for the Royston defence when he fired a shot across goal that was pushed away by Kyriatzis before rebounding off a Royston defender and onto the outside of the post.

Redditch are next in action at home to AFC Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday, March 26 with kick-off at 3pm at the Trico Stadium.
