FOOTBALL - Redditch United winless in 11 league matches after Rushall draw

REDDITCH United remain winless in their last 11 league games despite claiming a credible point against Rushall Olympic after a 1-1 draw at the Trico Stadium.

Jack Byrne opened the scoring for Matt Clarke’s side after just four minutes only for Danny Glover to equalise on 66 minutes and deny Redditch a first league win since September.

And the Reds finished the game with 10-men after Kieron Dawes was shown a second yellow card in the final few minutes.

The result leaves Redditch one point from safety in the Southern League Premier Central table – having failed to win any of their last 11 league matches.

However, after the game was given the go ahead – despite 40mph winds and the pitch being covered with snow earlier in the day – Redditch made the perfect start.

Skipper Byrne planted a header back across goal into the left corner of the net from Tiago Nassunculo’s cross with just four minutes on the clock.

And the Reds almost doubled their lead when debutant Charlie Williams drove forwards and saw his effort deflected narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

Clarke’s side then had a penalty shout for handball turned down by the referee after Dan Sweeney’s effort appeared to strike a raised Rushall arm in the box.

However, Rushall came close to a leveller shortly before the break when Richard Batchelor’s stunning dipping volley went narrowly over the crossbar.

And the away side’s pressure eventually paid off when Glover fired home the equaliser from close range after Reds keeper Kieran Boucher had kept out a set-piece.

Rushall almost snatched a winner when substitute Kory Roberts headed inches over the bar before Dawes received his second yellow card in the final moments of normal time.

Redditch saw out the final few minutes to come away with an impressive point against a strong Rushall side who look like challenging for promotion this season.

Next up for Redditch is a daunting trip to second place Peterborough Sports on Saturday, December 4 with kick-off at 3pm at the Bee Arena.
