FOOTBALL - Redditch United progress in Birmingham Senior Challenge Cup

Redditch Editorial 16th Nov, 2021   0

REDDITCH United advanced in the Birmingham Senior Challenge Cup after a 2-0 win against Coventry United thanks to goals from Jade Ferron and Kieran Day.

Ferron opened the scoring inside 60 seconds before Day doubled Redditch’s lead on 18 minutes to all but seal the win before half-time.

The win was their second cup success in as many matches after they beat Alvechurch 3-1 in the Worcestershire Senior Cup on Armistice Day.

Matt Clarke’s side made the perfect start when Ferron drove into the box before finding the right-hand side of the goal from Alex Cameron’s flicked header in the first minute.

And after a header was cleared off the line – Redditch would soon have their second when a clearance fell to Day just outside of the penalty area who hit a sublime first-time effort into the top-right corner of the goal.

Soon after, Day almost doubled his tally with a dipping volley that crashed against the crossbar as the Reds came within inches of extending their lead.

Ryan Wollacott then came to the hosts rescue when he did brilliantly to deny Kyle Carey after the Coventry player had touched the ball past Redditch keeper Kieran Boucher.

Redditch hit the woodwork again as the half came to a close when Luke Cox rose highest only to be kept out by a combination of the post and Coventry keeper Reece Francis.

The Reds had a couple of half-chances in the second period when Wollacott headed inches wide before Tiago Nassunculo’s low ball across the box almost forced Coventry’s Liam Cairns to turn the ball into his own net.

Coventry finished the game strongly with Boucher holding well from Joe Blowers’ effort as the Reds saw out the final minutes to secure another much-needed win as they look to build some momentum ahead of their return to league action this weekend.

Redditch travel to AFC Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday, November 20 with kick-off at 3pm at Hayden Road.
