FOOTBALL - Redditch United held to draw by 10-man Barwell

REDDITCH UNITED fought back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with 10-man Barwell and extend their unbeaten run in the league to four matches.

Dan Sweeney provided the Reds equaliser with a penalty on 20 minutes after Max Brogan had opened the scoring for the home side on five minutes.

The result leaves Redditch in 16th place in the Southern Premier League Central table, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Matt Clarke’s side made a slow start and were punished when Brogan slotted past Reds goalkeeper Kieran Boucher from a defence splitting through ball.

However, Redditch were given a golden chance to equalise when Sweeney’s goalbound shot was saved on the line by Barwell defender Elliot Percival who was shown a straight red card.

And Sweeney duly converted the resulting spot kick into the bottom right corner having missed a crucial penalty against Needham Market the previous weekend.

The striker almost doubled his tally early in the second half when he headed onto the top of the bar after Ryan Boothe had kept Kieron Dawes’ deep cross in play.

Redditch struggled to break down their opponents despite having the man advantage and spurned a chance to win the game when Sweeney was denied by Barwell keeper Liam Castle when one-on-one.

The Reds are next in action at home to Pershore Town tonight (Monday, February 7) with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Trico Stadium.
