FOOTBALL - Redditch fightback ends in late defeat against Kings Langley

REDDITCH United suffered a cruel 3-2 defeat at home to Kings Langley having initially fought back from a two-goal first-half deficit.

The Reds were two goals down inside the opening half an hour before Bernard Mensah and Ryan Wollacott both struck in first-half injury time to draw the home side level.

However, Kings Langley snatched the points in the final few minutes when Ryan Case found the net to leave Redditch empty-handed at the Trico Stadium.

The result means Redditch sit 10th in the Southern League Premier Central table after two matches.

And Reds midfielder Max Sheaf had the first chance of the game when his shot was saved by visiting goalkeeper Hafed Al-Droubi in the opening few minutes from Ryan Nesbitt’s clever chipped pass.

However, Kings Langley took the lead on 13 minutes when Kennedy Feyi finished across Reds goalkeeper Kieran Boucher into the bottom left corner of the goal.

And it soon became worse for Redditch when Boucher was closed down by Jamie Jellis which rushed the Reds keeper to inadvertently clear the ball against the Kings Langley player and into the net.

Redditch responded right on the stroke of half time when Mensah took the ball down and placed a low shot into the bottom left corner to give the home side hope after Reece Flanagan’s initial effort was blocked.

And the Reds equalised in time added on at the end of the first half as Wollacott rose highest to plant a header past Al-Droubi from Flanagan’s corner.

Matt Clarke’s side almost completed the comeback in the second period when Mensah’s extraordinary effort from 30-yards out hit the crossbar and bounced to safety.

The home side were forced to play the final quarter of an hour with 10-men after Lewis Hudson picked up a head injury, having almost scored directly from a cross moments earlier, with all three substitutes already used up.

And the visitors upped the ante in the final few minutes, as they looked to make the most of their numerical advantage, as Case hit the post with a shot from distance.

However, the same player was not to be denied a second time and grabbed the winner on 88 minutes when he poked home following an almighty scramble in the box caused by a dangerous low free-kick.

Redditch are back in action against Stratford Town TONIGHT (Monday, August 15) with kick-of at 7.45pm at the Trico Stadium.
