Exciting times at Redditch Hockey Club

REDDITCH Hockey Club will be joining over 110 clubs across the country in taking part in the national Back To Hockey campaign this autumn.

RHC are running sessions for men and women every Wednesday between 7-8pm until mid-October and they cater for people who may not have played hockey for a long period of time or who are looking to try the sport for the first time.

REDDITCH men’s first team’s final warm-up game saw them host Henley and the home side enjoyed a 4-1 victory.

The early stages of the game were controlled by the visitors who went 1-0 up after sustained pressure on the Redditch goal.

Indeed, it took Sam Bevan – playing his first competitive game for over a year in the Redditch goal – to make a couple of great saves to keep Redditch in the contest.

The home side started to feel their way into the match and always looked a threat on the break and Dave Baker scored from a thunderous short corner strike to bring the score level.

Within five minutes and two quickfire breaks Redditch had knocked the stuffing out of the visitors with goals from Jason Abbotts and captain Dan Waite to lead 3-1 at half time.

The second half was less eventful but more controlled by Redditch who frustrated the visitors, allowing them little time on the ball.

Another goal from Baker, this time a flicked short corner, completed the scoring and Redditch will head to West Bromwich for Saturday’s West Midlands Premier Division opener in good heart.

REDDITCH Ladies’ first team completed a quickfire early season Worcestershire League Division One double over neighbours Bromsgrove 1sts as they secured a 4-1 away win on Saturday.

Just seven days after a 3-2 home success, Redditch were at it again as they produced a strong attacking display with Ruth Waite and Anna Stafford each scoring before half time.

A passionate Redditch battled hard, without fear of playing the ball backwards to move forwards, and Stafford put her name on the scoresheet again after a one-on-one with the keeper.

Player of the match Emma Preston made it 4-0 before the hosts grabbed a consolation goal.

REDDITCH Badgers travelled to Hampton-in-Arden on Saturday, but were a player short, so in good spirit Hampton loaned a player to make the teams equal in numbers.

An exciting 2-2 draw followed as Redditch, captained by Amy Jones, fought back from 2-0 down shortly into the second half.

Visiting keeper Jacob Knight made some good saves to keep Redditch in the contest and they found a way back as forwards Jake Porter, Caitlin Hillier, Josh Baker and Harrison Knight impressed.

A penalty corner was won and, assisted by Baker, Harrison Knight scored his first goal on his Badgers debut with a shot on goal from the top of the circle.

This inspired the young Redditch side and defenders Sean McCaughey and Jones prevented Hampton from increasing their lead and midfielders Josh Brown and Ethan Reeves worked tirelessly to get the ball up to the front line.

With five minutes left the ball was played into the Hampton circle by Baker and it found Porter who in turn fired the ball past the keeper to equalise.

The Badgers travel to Worcester on Saturday.
