MOUNTAIN BIKING: REDDITCH’S Beth Crumpton has been selected to represent England in next month’s Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old Redditch mountain biker is the current U-23 cross country British Champion and said she was over the moon at the news, which was slightly unexpected.

“It was a surprise because I have had a bit of bad luck in my last two World Cup races and in the European Championships as I didn’t finish two of them.”

“However, I won the British Cross Country Series last month so that helped.”

” This is up there with my top achievements – getting selected to my first major games.

I have in the past achieved personal goals including coming fifth at the world championships in Austria 2012 and last year came 8th in World Cup in the under-23 category after moving up from the juniors.”

Crumpton has been living and training in Manchester for the past two years, which she says has been a tremendous hhelp.

“Instead of university I went straight into a full-time training environment.

“It’s one of the best decisions I have made and I have been thrilled with it.

“You know you are in really good hands and I feel like it is one of the best programmes out there.

“The coaching staff are incredible. And all the cyclists are there to do the same job so we are thriving off each other in training.

“One of the girls I live with, Alice Barnes [19] has also been selected for the team.

“This will be my first multi-sport games and I want to experience the athletes village and the get a feel for the big team atmosphere and have a really good ride and do myself, my family and friends proud.”

The mountain bike event will take place on July 29 situated 5km outside of Glasgow
