Cookhill move into second place

COOKHILL managed to defeat both hosts Inkberrow and the weather on Saturday to climb into second place in Cotswold Hills League Division Four.

The 20-run victory in this rain-affected fixture leaves Cookhill 27 points behind leaders Lapworth and four above third placed Blockley with four games remaining, the first of which is Saturday’s visit of Henley-in-Arden.

Thanks to the brilliant work of the Inkberrow groundstaff and the state-of-the-art drainage at Inkberrow, only nine overs were lost to a thunderstorm.

After losing the toss, Cookhill were predictably put into bat on a wicket that still definitely offered something for the bowlers despite the covers being on beforehand.

However, openers Roger Smith and Dan Mills started as they meant to continue, putting on 70 for the first wicket before Mills fell.

Smith carried on his impressive form, making 66 including some great boundaries on a slow outfield due to the moisture from previous rain.

Cookhill continued to tick over the scoreboard, with handy contributions from Jordan Hobbis (25), Chris Pearsall (21), Rich Biddle and Andy Fennell (16) and they finished on 216-7 from their 45 overs, meaning Inkberrow were set 174 to win from their reduced allocation of 36 overs.

The Roosters started well, with skipper Liam Donohoe bowling tightly and being well supported by Allen Smith and Andy Fennell.

Only a quickfire 40 from Inkberrow’s Dan Baker threatened Cookhill and once his key wicket fell Cookhill wrapped things up nicely with three wickets apiece for Fennell and Shuttleworth, two for Donohoe, one for Smith and a fantastic run out from Hobbis.

The 2nd XI game was called off before starting as the Cookhill square and outfield was waterlogged.
