Alcester's young aces win Junior Cup

ALCESTER B held their nerve to win the Wildmoor Spa League Junior Cup with a two rubbers to one victory over Stratford A in the final.

Played at Alcester Tennis Club, this was the first time a B team had competed in a final after the Alcester B side had beaten their sister team Alcester A in Pool A to qualify for first the play-offs and then the final.

The 12 and under competition, sponsored by league president and Alcester man Tony King, began in March with four pools of four pairs playing each other and taking it in turns to host each month.

In July, a play-off pool was held at Littletons when the four pool winners – Alcester B, Littletons, Pershore and Stratford – played each other, with the top two sides reaching this final.

Despite Stratford A appearing favourites on paper, Alcester B had defeated them in the play-offs and were brimming with confidence.

However, with this being a best of three sets cup final, the contest was extremely even. First blood went to Alcester B as Henry Beer and Ollie Linnett took the opening set 6-3.

Stratford James Richards and Oliver Murphy hit back to level at 1-1 when they took the second set 6-3 and games went to the wire before Alcester B broke and went on to take the final set 6-3.

King presented the players with individual awards and of course the cup to the winners and Junior League organiser Corin Bishop presented a cheque for £50 from the Wildmoor league to Alcester Tennis Club to help develop their junior section.
