ALCESTER continued their dominant streak in Counties Two Midlands West (South) with their 10th win of the season, securing a 31-13 home victory over Southam at the weekend.
The hosts opened the scoring within 10 minutes as Ieuan Hopkin crashed over at the back from a catch-and-drive lineout and quickly manufactured another try in similar fashion allowing Max Biltcliffe to go over from short range. Mark Burrell kicked an impressive conversion.
Southam did look strong in the scrum but despite the visitors’ defiance in the front row, Alcester spoilt their show by stealing a lineout and getting the ball to Ed Gough to surge over the line for another converted score to lead 19-0 at half time.
Southam finally got themselves on the board in the second half through a penalty and a charge down in Alcester’s territory led to a Southam try after a race to the ball and dive over the whitewash.
Alcester upped the tempo. A quick tap penalty set Josh O’Connor free for a score and Alcester captain Will Silk added another under the posts less than five minutes later.
In the final stages, Southam crashed over one last time but the missed conversion brought the game to an end.
