Alcester are looking good

LEADERS Alcester A maintained their 100 per cent record after four weeks of the Wildmoor Summer Tennis League with a 4-0 win over mid-table Chipping Campden.

Champions Stratford stay second with a 4-0 whitewash of Henley-in-Arden who are still without a point. Pershore are third thanks to a 4-0 victory over bottom-placed Evesham and Alcester B surprised Littleton by beating them 3-1 in a close match.

Alcester A were made to earn their points against Campden as Charlie Watson and Marcus Powell beat Geoff Vaughan and Tobias Kemp 6-2, 6-4. They then defeated Tom Partridge and George Richards (Campden) 6-3, 6-2.

Barney Williams and Sam Thruston-Nend were taken to a tie-break before overcoming Partridge and Richards 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 and they then beat Vaughan and Kent 6-2, 6-0.

Stratford continued their unbeaten run, with a 4-0 win over Henley-in-Arden who are still without a point this season. Stratford’s first pair Max Hurtubise and Ryan Bolton beat Matt Williams and Tom Griffiths 6-3, 6-2 and then beat Marcus Tate and Max Retallack (Henley) 6-4, 6-0.

Will Morley-Cotterell and Jeremy Simmons dropped only two games in their thrashing of the Henley pairs. First they beat Tate and Retallack 6-0, 6-0 and then Williams and Griffiths 6-2, 6-0.

Pershore had an even tougher task before emerging winners over Evesham. Jon Guppy and Matt Sime (Pershore) squeezed past Andrew Crowther and Sam Turner 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 and then beat Simon Wall and Paul Everatt 6-3, 6-3.

Bradley Smith and Dan Walker beat Wall and Everatt 6-3, 6-3 and struggled past Crowther and Turner 6-7, 6-4, 1-0.

Alcester B took the honours 3-1 against Littleton, but not without an almighty battle. Alcester B’s first pair Sam Thruston-Nend and Pete Watson needed a championship tie-break before overcoming Sean Witheford and Ali Witheford 1-6, 6-3, 1-0. The Alcester pair then went on to beat Simon Blewitt and Richard Herborn 6-1, 6-3.

On the other court, club chairman Duncan Robinson and Emma Hubbard struggled before overcoming Blewitt and Herborn 6-3, 3-6, 1-0, but the Alcester pair lost to Witheford and Witheford 2-6, 1-6.

In Division One, Ardencote Manor stay top after defeating Stratford B by a 3-1 scoreline and pushing Stratford down to fifth.

Redditch moved up to second thanks to their 3-1 away win over third-placed Claverdon and Moreton-in-Marsh slipped to joint third after being held to a draw by Alcester C. Shipston stay rooted to the bottom after no match.

In Division Two there was a top of the table clash between leaders Pershore B and Ardencote B. No quarter was given and the match ended in a 2-2 draw which gave third-placed Snitterfield a chance to catch the leaders when they travelled to Inkberrow A.

However, Inkberrow A managed a terrific 4-0 victory and in consequence jumped up three places to share the lead with Pershore B, while at the same time Snitterfield were pushed down to fourth.

Warwick joined Snitterfield in fourth place after they managed a 3-1 win over second-bottom Henley B. A bottom of the table encounter saw Chipping Campden B entertain Claverdon B and a close but valuable 4-0 win allowed Campden B to climb to sixth, leaving Claverdon B bottom.

Bidford A remained top of Division Three despite being held to a 2-2 draw by third-placed Shipston B because second-placed Redditch B surprisingly lost 4-0 to joint third-placed Chipping Campden B.

Mid-table Studley B drew at home to Inkberrow C and Inkberrow B’s 3-1 win over Evesham B meant they were lifted off the foot of the table.

In Division Four Stratford C retained their lead thanks to a 4-0 victory over bottom team Bidford B. Wildmoor A stay second due to their 3-1 win over Moreton-in-Marsh B.

Tysoe scored their first points of the season in a marathon match against Warwickshire County Council which included two championship tie-breaks before Tysoe took a 3-1 win.

Third-placed Aston Cantlow visited fourth-placed Redditch C and came away with 2-2 draw.

In Division Five, Pershore C stay top although they only gained two points from their latest match with Wildmoor C. This is because the match stood at 2-0 to Pershore when rain forced a stop for the evening and the match will be finished at a later date.

Wildmoor Spa B join Pershore C at the top thanks to a 4-0 away victory over Henley C. Claverdon C are close behind the leading two after they beat Littleton B with a convincing 4-0 score.

Moreton-in-March C stay fourth following their 2-2 home draw with bottom side Shipston C.
