Adshead left frustrated by weather

STEVE ADSHEAD reflected on another frustrating, soggy Saturday after Astwood Bank’s push for victory was ruined by rain.

Having smashed 286 for nine off their 50 overs, with Adshead hitting 83 and Tom Pedley 72, Bank felt they set a challenging score for hosts Aston Manor in their Birmingham League Division Three fixture.

Three quick wickets left Aston 38-3 and though they rallied to 73-3 play was halted after 18 overs.

Had two more overs been bowled, then there would have been enough play to allow Duckworth-Lewis to settle the result and Bank were well ahead of their run-affected equations.

Adshead had been keen to try to squeeze in the extra 12 balls amid the showers but Aston skipper Russell Guy and the umpires ruled play was not possible.

For the third time in four matches this fledgling season, Bank were scuppered by rain and while Adshead was understandably disappointed he highlighted the positives, with bat and ball.

“Having been put into bat on a soft, green pitch, I was delighted to rack up 280. It was very much an over-par score,” said Adshead. “We built a good platform and put together some solid partnerships.

“We knew they would come at us when they batted but I was really happy with the way we bowled to put them on the back foot.

“It was just disappointing we couldn’t get another 12 balls to constitute a game so Duckworth-Lewis would have come into play. I thought we had a chance to get back onto the pitch but the umpires and the Aston Manor captain disagreed.

“We just have to take it on the chin and look to build on all the good things that we’ve done. There’s a lot of confidence in the way we’re playing.”

Adshead lead by example against Aston, topscoring with 83 off 63 balls.

Put into bat, Bank’s innings was built around positive partnerships involving Tom Pedley, Adshead and Tom Underhill.

Pedley, batting at No 3, cracked 72 off 64 balls with six fours and four sixes, to take the score to 139-3 before falling, and then Underhill and Adshead added 68 for the fourth wicket before Underhill was dismissed for 24.

Tom Harris, with a run-a-ball 12, and Andrzej Jagielski, 18 off 25, kept the scoreboard ticking over as Bank ended on 286-9. Shaun Findlay was the pick of the Aston bowlers with 5-64.

In reply, Bank set about their task with real gusto. Harris snapped up two wickets before Aston had 20 on the board and Jake Price captured a third to leave Aston 38-3.

Opener Russell Guy and Byron Wingard steadied the ship to take the score to 73-3 after 18 overs before the rain forced the players to the pavilion.

On Saturday, Astwood Bank entertain league leaders Handsworth.
