Wheel life as district chief hears of group's fundraising exploits

THE ladies of Redditch Inner Wheel welcomed their district chairman, Sylvia Hook, and new member Joanne Austin to their recent lunch meeting at The Southcrest Manor Hotel.

Following lunch they heard reports varying from current to future plans which include garden visits, craft days, jubilee tea and a ‘Promises’ auction.

Sylvia was especially pleased to hear about the group’s walk around Arrow Valley Lake which was not only proved highly enjoyable but also raised funds for The Stroke Association.

Some members walked several laps while others enjoyed refreshments at the visitor centre.

She also heard about the talk the ladies listened to in January when an update was given about the charity, Waterloo Schools.

This is a project, now under the care of his wife Sue, which was started by the late Laurie Reed.

Laurie was a consultant at the Alexandra Hospital.

As a young man he went out to Sierra Leone on a gap year and worked in a school in the town of Waterloo.

Many years later he returned and found his old headmaster still at the school but the building itself had been devastated by insurgents.

When he went home he went round local schools appealing for equipment.

This he sent out to the Waterloo School, leading to the birth of the charity.

Laurie also helped out at the local hospital and sent out lots of ‘old’ kit from the Alex and other hospitals.
