THE past few days in Westminster have been interesting to say the least, and at times it has felt more like the plot of a novel than the cold reality that the UK will be leaving the EU on March 29 2019, writes Redditch MP Rachel Maclean.
It’s my duty to deliver the Brexit Redditch voted for, and it’s clear everyone wants us to just get on with it.
We do not have time for a battle royale in the heart of the Conservative Party between factions and people who are more interested in career advancement than doing the right thing by the country.
We also do not have time for Labour’s flip-flopping on Brexit either.
One minute they say they’ll honour the referendum in which 62.3 per cent of Redditch voted to leave the EU, the next minute they’re saying they want us in the single market and the customs union.
It’s actually pretty easy to respect Brexit and I know this as someone who converted to Brexit after the referendum and hasn’t wavered since.
But Labour are flip-flopping because they are hedging their bets for maximum political gain, so they try to win seats where Brexit voters have become fed up and may be considering a vote against the Conservatives.
All this does is hand seats to Labour and would end the Brexit dream for sure.
Whilst I completely understand the frustration everyone feels right now, I also know that I am an MP in a party that is firmly committed to taking control of our borders and ending free movement of people, the money we send to the EU, and our ability to set our own rules, laws and trade deals with countries around the world.
That is what Redditch voted for, and it must happen – but it won’t happen if we let Labour in through the back door whilst we are all arguing in the hallway. Eyes on the prize; back to work.
