Westminster Diary: Redditch MP talks Agriculture Bill with local farmers

Redditch Editorial 15th Nov, 2020   0

AS well as holding my virtual surgery last Friday, November 6, I also met, virtually, with local farmers and members of the National Farmers Union.

The Redditch constituency doesn’t just take in the town, but it stretches as far as The Lenches near Evesham.

Therefore, food and farming are a bedrock of our local economy and environment.

We discussed a range of issues including the Agriculture Bill.

This Bill will allow the UK to move to a system of paying farmers public money for public goods including environmental protection, access to the countryside, and work to reduce flooding.

The Bill will also champion British food by improving transparency and fairness in the supply chain and through investing in new technology and research to ensure our food producers remain competitive and innovative.

Food standards after Brexit is another issue I also receive a lot of emails on.

I was pleased to make it clear to the farmers that we will not compromise on our high environmental protection, animal welfare and food standards.

In fact, we’re actually going to go further than EU standards and I know this is something farmers welcome.

These aren’t the only manifesto commitments we’re continuing to deliver on, even as the Government continues to tackle the coronavirus.

This week, the landmark Immigration Bill receives Royal Assent – delivering on our commitment to end free movement and pave the way for a new, points-based immigration system.

This will allow us to attract the people we need to drive our economy forward, laying the foundations for a high wage, high skill and high productivity economy.

“I’m continuing to meet with my constituents, virtually of course, and if anyone would like an appointment then please send an email to [email protected] or call my office on 01527 591334.
