West Mercia Police highlight dangers of driving uninsured as part of nationwide clampdown

Redditch Editorial 20th Nov, 2021   0

OFFICERS from West Mercia Police have been targeting uninsured drivers this week and highlighting the consequences and implications of motorists not having policies in place.

A week-long campaign developed by MIB (Motor Insurers’ Bureau) and supported by the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC).

The drive began on Monday, November 15, and has seen roads targeted to detect and seize uninsured vehicles across the region.

Last year more than 26,000 people were left injured in collisions caused by uninsured and untraced drivers.

Evidence also shows drivers without insurance are more likely to be involved in other crimes, be it using a stolen vehicle, driving while disqualified or substance abuse.

So far this year over 100,000 uninsured vehicles have been seized by police forces across the UK.

A total of £400million is paid in compensation each year to provide support to victims of uninsured and untraced crashes.

Figures from the Department for Transport indicate these collisions cost the economy a further £2billion-a-year in emergency services, medical care, loss of productivity and property damage.

Supt Gareth Morgan from West Mercia Police said: “Driving without valid insurance is not only against the law, it also devastates the lives of many other road users each year.

“Supporting this national campaign with increased education and local enforcement activity is part of our commitment to help improve road safety for all, reduce the amount of people that are killed or seriously injured on our roads and to deny criminals the use of the roads”.

Those caught without valid insurance can have their vehicles seized and crushed, along with a £300 fixed penalty notice and six licence points.

They can also face court and receive a driving ban and an unlimited fine.
