ONLOOKERS watched in horror as England fans celebrating the victory over Panama on Sunday spilled out on to Unicorn Hill, stopping traffic, climbed on a Diamond Bus before ‘surfing’ on it down the hill.

The driver was repeatedly spat at and sworn at and youths tried to jump at his window.

In video footage youths are seen climbing on to the roof of the bus to the cheers of the crowd.

As the driver sounds his horn to try and clear a way through another youth is seen clambering on to the back of the vehicle and clinging on as it continues down Unicorn Hill.

Meanwhile terrified shop workers and pedestrians had to run for it as the mob spilled out onto the street.

One man, who had gone to collect his wife from work said: “It was absolutely disgusting.

“People were terrified by the mob and had to seek refuge in shops.

“I want to know where the Police were. They knew it was a 1pm kick off, they knew people would have been drinking all afternoon and yet there wasn’t one of them about to keep order.

“It’s good fun for until someone falls off a bus and gets hurt or worse – my blood was boiling.”

Chris Bridges, operations manager at Diamond Buses said: “I’m horrified and I’m ashamed and I’m very angry.

“This behaviour is totally unacceptable – my concern was for the driver and passengers and other road users.

“The driver was repeatedly spat at, which is absolutely disgusting.

“And then what if the guy who jumped on the back of the bus had fallen off – he could have died.

“I’m mortified that they put people in danger and themselves in danger.

“I’m a football fan, I love football, but to celebrate by attacking a bus, spitting at the driver and trying to jump through the window?

“That is totally unacceptable and I will be contacting the Police to find out what measures they will be putting in place for future fixtures.”
