A TALENTED youngster from Redditch achieved Gold and Silver at the British Indoor Rowing Championships.

Woodrush High School pupil Danny Thompson competed at Lee Valley Velopark on December 7.

He picked up Gold in the timed race and Silver in the 500m sprint.

The fantastic achievement proves what potential he has, despite having limited experience.

The year 9 student had never rowed until he entered the Redditch District School Games, held at Birchensale Middle School, last year.

After winning the individual rowing race he was selected to represent Redditch District at the Worcestershire Schools’ Summer Games, held at Bromsgrove School.

Danny excelled again and was later scouted by British Rowing and Sport England which invited him to compete at the championships.

The Rowing Indoor Championship, held in London and now in its 5th year, regularly has more than 2,000 competitors attend.

“I felt really nervous competing in front of thousands of spectators and really good athletes but I am really proud myself,” said Danny when reflecting on

his achievements.
