Special delivery - birthday card from the Queen delivered on horseback

A BIRTHDAY letter from the Queen was delivered on horseback to a Redditch grandmother as she turned 100 years old on Monday, August 19.

Bowood Court and Mews Care Home organised the unusual delivery for its popular resident Mary Kavanagh, originally from Dublin, who is better known by her middle name Maisie.

She also received a visit from Redditch Mayor Councillor Roger Bennett, during her lavish birthday celebrations with family and friends.

The Hewell Road care home’s manager, Dawn Leaver, said: “The delivery of the telegram was a wonderful touch and certainly sparked a lot of conversation.

“As a grandmother to 11 children we know how important family is to Maisie.

“So we hosted a celebration they would all cherish during the extra-special milestone, including lots of refreshments and live entertainment.”

Maisie moved to Birmingham from Dublin in 1942 after marrying her husband John in 1941.

The pair had six children, five boys and one girl.

Dawn added: “Maisie worked in a sauce factory for many years and is well-known at our care home for her love of tomato ketchup.”
