Spare food plan sees street food guru, YMCA, and cafe help homeless

A LOCAL community cafe has teamed up with YMCA to distribute leftover food to the homeless and less fortunate.

Polly Jones, owner of Rees Cafe on Church Road, got in contact with her friend Dan Rybinski, who often does street-food, to arrange a food-drop on June 18.

Dan loves cooking for people but sometimes finds himself with leftovers.

The pair realised they could put an end to throwing away food by giving it to people who need it the most.

Dan said: “Hopefully we can continue to do this regularly because I think it’s a great way of making sure food isn’t wasted.

“In all honesty, on a normal day, it would have just been thrown away.”

After dropping off hot pork sandwiches to the cafe, Polly arranged for YMCA Worcestershire to come and collect it.

Later on that day the YMCA distributed the food to homeless people in Worcestershire.

Polly said: “We just want to give something back to the community and it’s something we want to keep doing.

“This is only the beginning and we would really appreciate food donations in the future.

“Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Mike Knowles, Job Coach at YMCA Worcestershire, said: “The staff at Rees Cafe are doing great things and I hope we can work together again in the future.”
